Pop-up books always seem to appeal to adults and children alike. Paper engineering is one more skill Richard Deverell adds to illustration - his colourful birds and animals almost leap from the pages.
Richard happily takes on commissions to illustrate the various elements for the work of other paper engineers, and when the project demands it, he subcontracts the engineering to a colleague. The Christmas story shown here was engineered by Tim Bullock, the terraced hillside expertly created from only two pieces of card.
A lot of work goes into paper engineering for pop-up books, a fusion of art and physics and is not for the fainthearted. Very few paper engineers have been instructed how to do it. There are books outlining and even demonstrating the basic principles of the skill, so most paper engineers have taught themselves, and have contributed a great deal to their local paper recycling schemes as a result!
